Our Interview with Pachangacha.

With so many bands being formed out of the ashes of other bands, it’s hard to see those projects that have been started to actually do something and make a name for them selfs in a local music scene, let alone do a successful tour. Pachangacha on the other hand, is doing that as we speak. Formed out of two bands, Chalk Talk and Black Churches (and their good pal Albert on guitar), Pachangacha takes 90’s alternative and underground punk to create a genre as they call Muff Rock. Big sounding drums, loud/fuzzy guitars, falsetto vocals, and catchy basslines make this band a must hear for everyone in the DIY scene. With so much buzz surrounding this band at the moment, we caught up with them recently to see what has been going on with them lately, and their future plans.
1. I think we’ll start off with the cliche first question, how did the band form?
Bryce decided he wanted to start an all big muff, all fuzz, all falsetto band. So he asked Ryan, Albert who happened to have a big muff, and Brian is just my (Bryce’s) go to bassist, so he was in the band with no choice.
2. It’s been a little over a half of a year since “Berserkabunga” has been released, how have these past 6 months been for you guys?
Good times. Shitty times. Lots of taco bell. And a lot of people hate us cause we said fag once, and a girl showed us her boob and kids thought we were degrading women. But she wanted to show us her boob. It was the first boob Brian ever saw.
3. I know that you guys went on a 2 week Summer tour this summer going through the midwest, How is the Midwest music scene different from the Northeastern music scene in your opinion?
We met a lot of good people, a lot of opinionated people, but over all everyone’s awesome! Nnamdi and is brother Alfred are the best! Nnamdi’s house of Pancakes, Lansing Illinois!! We saw a kid break his knee falling off one step. As far as the music scene itself goes, it seems like they try to do the same thing we do in terms of helping out touring bands/booking house and basement shows.
4. What were some highlights/crazy stories from the tour?
The first night in Rhode Island, there was a huge brawl. Brian tried to break up a few girls fighting within 30 people fighting and another kid punched Brian in the face at least 6 to 8 times, right after yelling down to us from the balcony “Paarttyyyy, parttyyyy.” Also, Bryce pooped his pants in the van and in the 4th grade. We ate a whole Chicago deep dish, (which was huge) and the waitress didn’t think we could do it, and we did so she gave us free cookies.
5. What have been some of your favorite shows thus far as a band?
The show we played at UMass with Algeron Cadwallader and Ape Up. Also at the end of the summer, we played in our living room at Babetown because our basement flooded, and that was a lot of fun.
6. Can there ever be too much Big Muff?
No, duh!
7. You guys are currently working on a full length right now, how do the new songs differentiate from “Berserkabunga”?
They are a little more developed, and we feel that these songs are starting to sound more like our own, rather then our influences. One time instead of practice, we had an orgy.
8. When can we expect the full length to be out?
Spring 2012
9. You guys, your other side projects, and most of the bands you play with are DIY punk style bands. What advice do you have for the new generation of kids who are getting into the underground/DIY punk scene?
Go to shows, book shows, buy records, donate to bands. Bring back real punks. Be real. Don’t talk shit on the internet. Have fun and be yourself.
10. You guys have been in bands for years now with all different types of bands, how has the scene changed since you first started playing music and playing shows?
There was no scene. We started booking shows and telling all our friends about our music and it all snowballed from there.
11. What are some local/underground bands that you guys have been listening to lately?
Bryce- Sneeze, High Pop, and Fungi Girls, Algernon Cadwallader
Albert- Glocca Morra, Benedicks,
Ryan- Band Name,
Brian- Weird Korea, High Pop, Solids,
12.What are some future plans for Pachangacha?
Write the rest of this record, record this record in the winter, and go to taco bell right now.
